The Vietnamese Giant White (VGW) is a popular, robust variety of dragon fruit (Hylocereus undatus) known for producing some of the largest fruits in its species. While most standard white dragon fruits weigh around 300–500 grams, this "Giant" cultivar can easily reach 750 to 1,000 grams (approx. 2 lbs) per fruit.

Key Characteristics

• Appearance: It features a vibrant pink or red exterior with long, light green fins (bracts). The interior flesh is bright white, speckled with tiny black edible seeds.
• Flavor: The taste is often described as mildly sweet and refreshing, similar to a mix of kiwi and watermelon.
• Growth & Care: It is a fast-growing, hardy cactus that performs well in USDA Zone 9B and above. It is highly prized by beginners because it is self-pollinating (self-fertile), meaning it can set fruit without the need for manual cross-pollination.
• Flowers: The plant produces large, fragrant, night-blooming white flowers that can reach 10–16 inches in diameter.

Cultivation Tips

• Harvesting: To maintain the best flavor, it is recommended to stop watering the plant about two days before harvesting; excess water right before picking can dilute the fruit's sweetness.
• Support: Because it is a heavy producer and a vining cactus, it requires a sturdy trellis or post for support.
• Pollen Donor: Due to its high pollen production, it is frequently used as a universal pollen donor to help fertilize other dragon fruit varieties that are not self-fertile.
