• Self-Fertility: Varieties such as "Vietnamese Red" and "Bien Hoa Red" are widely classified as self-fertile.
• Why Hand-Pollinate? Even with self-fertile varieties, natural pollinators like bees or bats may be absent. Hand-pollination ensures that pollen successfully reaches the stigma, especially in environments where natural pollination is unreliable.
• How to Hand-Pollinate:
  1. Timing: Dragon fruit flowers bloom at night and are only open for a short window. Perform this in the late evening or very early morning.
  2. Technique: Use a small, clean makeup brush to collect pollen from the anthers (the male parts) and dab it directly onto the stigma (the central, protruding female part).
  3. Cross-Pollination: For even better results, some growers prefer to use pollen from a different dragon fruit variety (cross-pollination), which can often produce larger and more robust fruit.
• Signs of Success: If pollination is successful, the flower base will remain firm and begin to swell, while the upper flower parts will wither and fall off within 7 days. If it fails, the entire flower will typically dry up and drop off
• Sun & Soil: Grows best in full sun with well-drained, organic-rich soil.
• Hardiness: Tolerant of heat and cold, suitable for zones 9-10.
• Management: Vigorous growth needs regular pruning (canopy management) to stay productive.
