Sin Espinas (Spanish for "without thorns") is a unique dragon fruit variety native to Nicaragua, prized primarily for its nearly thornless stems which make it much safer and easier to handle than traditional spiked varieties.

Fruit Characteristics

  • Appearance: Features a thick pink/red skin with green fins. Despite its exterior, it contains a firm, deep red flesh.
  • Flavor: Described as juicy and tart with a mild "cherry" or "grape" vibe.
  • Sweetness: It has a respectable sugar content, with Brix scores typically ranging from 15 to 19.8.
  • Size: Fruits are medium-sized, typically weighing around 1 pound (approx. 400–500 grams).

Growing Profile

  • Plant Structure: A rapid grower with thin, light green stems. While considered "spineless," it may still have 1 or 2 tiny, microscopic spines (approx. 1mm) near the areoles.
  • Pollination: Most sources identify it as self-fertile, meaning it can produce fruit without needing pollen from another variety, though some specialty growers list it as self-sterile.
