Physical Graffiti dragon fruit is a highly-regarded, vigorous hybrid with vibrant magenta flesh, known for its excellent, complex tropical flavor (like berries and kiwi), juicy texture, and high sweetness, making it a favorite for home growers despite being self-sterile and requiring cross-pollination for fruit set. Created by Paul Thomson, this variety produces large fruits with red skin and distinctive scales, often weighing over a pound, and is praised for its vigorous growth and beautiful nocturnal flowers. 

Key Characteristics

• Flesh: Hot magenta/light purple, sweet, juicy, with tiny black seeds and a tropical taste with hints of berry, kiwi, or watermelon.
• Skin: Bright red/pinkish-red with distinctive scales.
• Size: Medium to large, often 0.75 to 1.5 pounds.
• Flavor (Brix): High sweetness, often 17 Brix or higher, indicating excellent sugar content.
• Growth: Vigorous, aggressive, three-sided stems, producing large, fragrant night-blooming flowers.
• Origin: A hybrid of Hylocereus guatemalensis and Hylocereus undatus, developed by Paul Thomson in Southern California. 

Growing & Pollination

• Self-Sterile: Requires pollen from another dragon fruit variety (usually red-fleshed) for cross-pollination to produce fruit.
• Sun & Soil: Grows best in full sun with well-drained, organic-rich soil.
• Hardiness: Tolerant of heat and cold, suitable for zones 9-10.
• Management: Vigorous growth needs regular pruning (canopy management) to stay productive.
