The Neitzel dragon fruit (often spelled 'Niezel') is a self-pollinating, white-fleshed variety known for its sweet, appealing flavor with a lemony tang and granular texture. It is a selection made by the California Rare Fruit Growers.

Characteristics and Growing Information

  • Flesh and Flavor: The fruit has firm, bright white flesh with a sweet, lemony flavor (Brix around 22) and a slightly granular texture.
  • Fruit Size: Fruits are generally considered medium to large, often weighing between 0.75 to 1.25 pounds. My plant produce fruit up to 2lbs.
  • Plant Details: It is a self-pollinating variety, which means it can set fruit without cross-pollination from another genetic type. The plant itself is a fast-growing, vining cactus that climbs using aerial roots and produces large, fragrant, night-blooming white flowers.
  • Growing Conditions: Neitzel plants are adaptable but thrive in well-drained, organic cactus mix with full sun exposure (6-8+ hours). They are best suited for USDA zones 10-11 and should be protected from frost.
