Mr. Woo is a popular, flavorful dragon fruit named after the person who first shared it, known for its deep purple flesh, red/pink skin, and a unique taste profile balancing tartness with sweet notes of cherry, berry, and raspberry.
Fruit Profile
- Flesh: Deep purple/magenta, firm texture, with a flavor described as grape-like, tangy, and mildly sweet, sometimes with raspberry or complex berry notes. Lower juice content than many other varieties.
- Size: Around 1 pound (400-500 grams).
- Skin: Pink to red with green fins (bracts).
- Brix: Around 17-19 – more tart when picked early, sweeter when left on the vine longer.
Plant Characteristics
- Growth: Vigorous, three-sided, olive-green growth with medium-sized spines; produces large, night-blooming white flowers.
- Pollination: Self-sterile – needs cross-pollination from a different variety.
Growing conditions: Full sun to partial shade. Water when the top inch of soil dries — dragon fruit is drought-tolerant and dislikes soggy roots. Hardy outdoors in USDA zones 9–11, or grow it in a pot or greenhouse and bring it inside when temperatures drop below 32°F.
