Lake Atitlan dragon fruit is a distinctive Pitahaya variety named after the volcanic lake in the Guatemalan Highlands where it was originally discovered, recognized for vigorous growth and a flavor that balances sweetness with a tangy, berry-like finish.

Fruit Profile

  • Flavor: Sweet and tangy, often compared to a mix of strawberries, raspberries, and boysenberries.
  • Brix: Most fruit tests between 16.5 and 18, with some individual fruit measuring as high as 19.8 to 20.
  • Size: Medium to large, typically 0.75 to 1.5 pounds, with some growers reporting fruit up to 2.5 pounds.
  • Appearance: Pinkish-red skin with green fins.

Growing conditions: Full sun to partial shade. Water when the top inch of soil dries — dragon fruit is drought-tolerant and dislikes soggy roots. Hardy outdoors in USDA zones 9–11, or grow it in a pot or greenhouse and bring it inside when temperatures drop below 32°F.
