Connie Mayer is a hybrid white-fleshed dragon fruit (Hylocereus stenopterus x Hylocereus undatus) created by German hybridizer Eckhard Meier, known for its distinct rosy floral and coconut flavor notes.
Fruit Profile
- Flesh Color: White.
- Skin Color: Green while ripening, turning transparent to light pink with lemon-lime green fins when ripe.
- Flavor: Rosy floral with hints of coconut; Brix averages around 20.
- Size: Small to medium, typically 0.25 to 1 pound.
Plant Characteristics
- Pollination: Self-sterile – needs pollen from a different, compatible variety (one without the stenopterus gene) to set fruit.
- Flowers: Medium-sized, with purple-pink inner petals and white tips; opens at dusk and closes at sunrise earlier than many other varieties.
- Growth: Tender, three-sided growth with small, delicate spines; fast-growing and vigorous.
Growing conditions: Full sun to partial shade. Water when the top inch of soil dries — dragon fruit is drought-tolerant and dislikes soggy roots. Hardy outdoors in USDA zones 9–11, or grow it in a pot or greenhouse and bring it inside when temperatures drop below 32°F.
