Condor is a popular, large dragon fruit variety known for its vibrant magenta/purple flesh and sweet flavor with berry and grape notes. A Hylocereus guatemalensis hybrid, it’s a robust grower that’s self-pollinating but rewards cross-pollination with bigger fruit.
Fruit Profile
- Flesh: Bright magenta or purple with excellent sweetness (Brix 19-20).
- Flavor: Rich and sweet with heavy grape and berry notes, sometimes slightly tart.
- Exterior: Light green skin with pink hues that deepen as it ripens.
- Size: Large, typically 1 to 1.5 pounds.
Plant Characteristics
- Growth: Aggressive, three-sided growth with small thorns; heavy pruning recommended.
- Pollination: Self-pollinating, but cross-pollination from another variety produces noticeably larger fruit.
- Harvest Cue: Pick when skin color deepens; withholding water for a couple of days beforehand improves flavor.
Growing conditions: Full sun to partial shade. Water when the top inch of soil dries — dragon fruit is drought-tolerant and dislikes soggy roots. Hardy outdoors in USDA zones 9–11, or grow it in a pot or greenhouse and bring it inside when temperatures drop below 32°F.
