Sin Espinas (Spanish for “without thorns”) is a unique dragon fruit variety native to Nicaragua, prized primarily for its nearly thornless stems, which make it much safer and easier to handle than traditional spiked varieties.

Fruit Profile

  • Appearance: Thick pink/red skin with green fins surrounding firm, deep red flesh.
  • Flavor: Juicy and tart with a mild cherry or grape character.
  • Brix: Typically 15 to 19.8.
  • Size: Medium, typically around 1 pound (400-500 grams).

Plant Characteristics

  • Growth: A rapid grower with thin, light green stems; considered “spineless” though it may carry one or two microscopic spines near the areoles.
  • Pollination: Most sources describe it as self-fertile, though some specialty growers list it as self-sterile – worth confirming before you count on it as a solo producer.

Growing conditions: Full sun to partial shade. Water when the top inch of soil dries — dragon fruit is drought-tolerant and dislikes soggy roots. Hardy outdoors in USDA zones 9–11, or grow it in a pot or greenhouse and bring it inside when temperatures drop below 32°F.
