The Thomson White dragon fruit (often spelled “Thompson”) is a large, robust variety of Hylocereus undatus known for heavy production and high-quality white flesh. Named after Paul H. Thomson, a co-founder of the California Rare Fruit Growers, it’s a favorite for home growers because it’s self-pollinating.

Plant Characteristics

• Growth: Very thick, three-sided stems with small, delicate thorns; a fast grower that needs strong support.
• Flowers: Massive, nocturnal white blooms.
• Yield: A high producer, suitable for both home and commercial growing.
• Harvest Tip: Harvest on time, as ripe fruit can burst after rain; withholding water two days before harvest concentrates the flavor.

Growing conditions: Full sun to partial shade. Water when the top inch of soil dries — dragon fruit is drought-tolerant and dislikes soggy roots. Hardy outdoors in USDA zones 9–11, or grow it in a pot or greenhouse and bring it inside when temperatures drop below 32°F.
