The Israeli Yellow dragon fruit, also known as Golden Pitaya or the ‘Isis’/’Golden Yellow’ variety, was developed over several decades by botanists at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Beer-Sheva, Israel. It’s a yellow-skinned clone/selection of Hylocereus undatus, with growth characteristics closer to red-skinned Pitahaya than to typical yellow Selenicereus megalanthus varieties.

Fruit Profile

• Appearance: Elongated, rounded fruit, roughly 9-12 cm long and 7-10 cm wide. No spines – the thick yellow skin is covered in soft bracts/scales, like red-skinned varieties.
• Flesh: Dense, translucent to white, speckled with small black edible seeds.
• Flavor: Juicy and sweet with a tropical, kiwi-pear character; some tasters note lemon or sweet-lemonade notes. Widely regarded by pitahaya farmers as one of the highest-Brix dragon fruit varieties available – Alik’s own tasting registered 20.25.
• Season: Typically available mid-summer through fall.

Growing conditions: Full sun to partial shade. Water when the top inch of soil dries — dragon fruit is drought-tolerant and dislikes soggy roots. Hardy outdoors in USDA zones 9–11, or grow it in a pot or greenhouse and bring it inside when temperatures drop below 32°F.
