Store: Shulman Dragon Fruit Orchard • Moorpark, CA, US

Asunta 3 is a hybrid dragon fruit bred by Edgar Valdivia of the California Rare Fruit Growers, created by pollinating Asunta 2 with Condor a second time – the third generation in the Asunta line. Condor parentage is what gives the fruit its distinctive purple-toned flesh.

Fruit Profile

  • Appearance: Peach-colored skin with lemon-lime fins.
  • Flesh: Pink to purple, firm and juicy, with slightly crunchy seeds.
  • Flavor: Notes of melon, lychee, and cherry, plus a juicy grape character – sweet with a mild, smooth tartness.
  • Brix: Typically 19-21.
  • Size: Generally large, often exceeding 1.5 pounds.

Plant Characteristics

  • Parentage: Hylocereus stenopterus x H. guatemalensis lineage, with Condor as the repeat pollen parent.
  • Growth: Vigorous and aggressive – similar growth habit to H. guatemalensis but two to three times larger; performs well in full sun.
  • Flowers: Medium-sized, night-blooming, purple inner petals shading to light pink with white tips.
  • Pollination: Self-sterile – requires cross-pollination from another variety.
